Of Marlins and Manatees

You’re a major league baseball team. You’ve been in existence for 15 years, during which you’ve won 2 World Series. Your first year of operation, you carried a 64-98 record, but had an average attendance of 37,800 per game, 5th in the league for attendance. The only other time you’ve reached 5th was the year you first won the World Series. After that, attendance has been sliding: in 8 of the last 9 years attendance has been either last or second to last...

Synopsis of 5 Children's Books

Parents cannot receive enough helping guiding their children’s growth through reading. This article seeks to look at the meanings of five different children’s books through a slightly different – perhaps the adjective would be “twisted” – perspective. We will now explore the Dr. Seuss work Green Eggs & Ham, the bedtime classics Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown and Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible,...

The Meaning of Life and other non-sequiturs...or...

..."Imprecations of the immutable constants that we accept as animate existence" (loosely translated from the proper English, "The curse of life's unchangeable qualities"...How'd I do, Lew?) The title "The Meaning of Life" does not refer to Flashjeff's favorite movies - nary a Monty Python flick to be found!! - nor the sports goddess's similar list of sports movies. The title refers to these little tidbits from along the way today: On Boston.com today, we...

Accountability in Sports

One of the criticisms professional sports players receive is that they’re paid millions to play “a child’s game.” This is to discuss one aspect of why professional athletes receive high compensation: Accountability. I’ve spent considerable time discussing why I think professional sports at the highest level is just not playing a “childs’ game” – if you really think they’re playing a child’s game, I would direct your kind attention...

Another Sports Mash

The Bears searched long and hard for a free agent quarterback and finally landed their man - Rex Grossman? My first thought was "You've got to be kidding me." Now, the article I linked to (Craig Grouch...or was that Greg Couch?) has the same reaction I did. Why on planet NFL did the Bears resign Rex Grossman? Take a look at the other Free Agent QBs though: Ken Dorsey UFA Cleveland Browns Quinn Gray UFA Jacksonville Jaguars Ryan Fitzpatrick RFA Cincinnati Bengals Drew Henson...

Accident with Video Evidence

Yes, my dear readers, I was involved in a crash today. There I was - not another vehicle around - out for a leisurely ride. It's always a risky endeavor when traversing snowy trails, but it didn't seem wholly risky at the time. We were out as a family, just looking for a little something to do on a gray Sunday afternoon. I was fine one moment. The next, I had hit some ice and I was out of control, unable to stop. My children looked on with bemusement and dread as I raced headlong toward...

Sox & Pats: Coco & Spygate

So, there's offically a competition for the Centerfielders' position. Okay, so Jacoby Ellsbury isn't going to be the starter - what is the likelihood of that happening? Amalie Benjamin reminds Sox fans this is not an unprecedented situation. Fact is, the Red Sox will be moving Coco before the season starts. He's too good to be a 4th outfielder and having him rot on the bench will only lower his value. That's unacceptable. He's giving himself a way out as well, saying he'll give whatever spring...

Valentine's Day and a Little Rant

My beloved Mrs. Mo gave me the 2007 Red Sox World Series Collectors Edition Set yesterday for Valentine's Day. What better way to say "I love you" than the gift of baseball? Until I looked up the price online today. Holy crap. Now I remember why I hadn't bought it. The 2004 set goes for just about $100, so I guess it's not too bad for this one. So the headline here is "Rockies beat reliever Brian Fuentes in salary arbitration". So the Rox get to pay only...

Random Steriods Talk

I've got this nifty little BlackBerry PDA - my buddy Kevin knows all about my qwerty keypad. So does Verizon - after the Super Bowl I got hit with some serious overage charges.

Anyway, since I upgraded my plan - I even got me mobile web - I started thinking how I could write blog entries from my PDA. This, however, isn't an attempt, but it got me a'thinkin': I wonder if I could do a blog entry via SMS or text.

160 characters.

"Pettitte xcused frm congrs cuz he nailed Clemens in depostn. Jhn Rckr sys MLBPA & Selig new abt roids. "

Hmm. That’s 105 characters. Not terribly informative, or funny. Looks like I'll have to refine that idea. Here's what I would have wrote if I had more than 160 characters (spaces included) with which to work:

On the Clemens thing, it'll just be he and McNamee before Congress tomorrow. I don't know that I have a "side" here; it just seems to me that there's a couple of equally unsavory characters going up to the hill. I'm thinking there's probably enough holes in each story, but the reports are that Petite copped to having taken HGH himself and that he confirmed some of the basic tenets of McNamee's testimony.

The thing we always seem to say is that if something's untrue, why not come out and fight it to the hilt? That works if the situation is 100% black/white, true/false. Very little in life is that way. Vagaries, personal impression, context. All kinds of things get in the way. By responding like that a zero sum game is created: win/lose. Someone is lying.

Roger has taken the stance that it's all black and white, no gray, and that he's going to fight all the way. God bless, if there's nothing to be misconstrued or if you've truly done nothing wrong, but it's not really shaping up that way.

He's raised the stakes and it will be no one's fault but his if McNamee winds up winning here - if only part of what McNamee says is true, he's gotten the best of Roger because Rog ratcheted up the stakes. In a zero sum game, Roger is saying McNamee is lying. All McNamee has to do is demonstrate he's not on a few pieces for Rog to fall flat.

In related news, John Rocker seems to have slid out from under his rock and in so doing seems to have backed up a little of what Jose Canseco has been saying about A-Rod. Rocker says A-Rod, Ivan Rodriguez and Rafael Palmeiro were coached up by an MLBPA doctor about how steroids wouldn't be harmful. He also goes on to add to his credibility by saying "Bud Selig is a clown," but then immediately hits the barroom floor when he adds that "[Selig] should do the entire world a favor and kill himself. He is a certifiable idiot." Had he just not said that bit about committing suicide, he would have been 100% likable here.

I remember the conversation on the radio referenced by the NY Daily News article - Canseco was on the radio quite a bit late in the summer, and I want to say early fall, but I honestly don't remember the time frame. Anyway, he was saying that A-Rod isn't what he appears to be, but wouldn't say how. I'm wondering how that monster contract A-Rod just signed is looking now? In a humorous aside, Canseco was co-hosting a weekend show on WEEI and some shmoe called up making some just inane conversation. There's Canseco in the background going "Booorrring....Boooorrrring" and making all these snoring noises. Now THAT's Good radio.

Being a Parent

Being a parent means being consistent Because you're teaching your children the world has rules Being a parent means expressing anger Without expressing rage Being a parent means admitting mistakes when you make them You will not always make the right call and the world is better with people who understand they can be wrong Being a parent means doing the right thing, Because it's the right thing, not because it's the easy thing Being a parent means acting in someone else's best...

The Sun Has Come Out Again

After a week of grey skies, the sun has reemerged in New England. The sun last showed its face last Sunday and didn't dare show again after the Patriots loss. The Sun is a New England fan too. Mother Nature, on the other hand, is a Giants fan, as winter has also returned. Cold...rainy...snowy. Speaking of Giants fans, I'm never buying Gatorade again. I don't want any Super Bowl XLII paraphernalia in my house, and I certainly don't want to drink a Gatorade that reminds me of it. Last Monday,...

FMLA Expanded to include Military Service

The very first piece of legislation signed by President Bill Clinton, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) established the right to take 12 weeks of leave from your job if you have worked for a covered employer for at least a year and have worked 1250 hours.    The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) signed into law by President Bush on January 28, 2008 (HR 4986) has amended the FMLA by creating two new categories of leave in addition to those already covered:   An...

Has the Sporting Cosmos Returned to Normal?

With the Patriots loss in Super Bowl XLII, New England sports fans have returned to some of those old feelings we’ve experienced over the better part of the last half-century or so. In the first decade of the new millennium, the sporting universe seems to have realigned itself: not only did the previously lowly New England Patriots become a perennial contender, winning 3 Super Bowls along the way, the Red Sox have won 2 World Series Championships. Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics –...

Thomas the Tank Engine

In addition to “Dumbo The Flying Elephant,” my son has recently come to love the “Thomas the Tank Engine” DVD’s he received for Christmas. This series is an odd combination of still models and voice over: the trains’ faces seem change and their eyes move, but there is no live action and we never actually see their faces move, only the results.   As I’ve come to watch these programs more frequently, I have come to some conclusions about this program...

Writing for Associated Content

So you’re considering writing for Associated Content submission. The most important thing to remember is that while AC calls itself “THE PEOPLE’S MEDIA COMPANY” it is not. Associated Content, is, however, a content site powered by inexpensive content that relies on ad revenue. The largest question to ask yourself if you decide to submit content to AC is whether or not the earnings potential associated with earning $1.50 per 1,000 page views with monthly payouts...

Super Bowl Prediction Accountability

Super Bowl XLII: Prediction Accountability SUPER BOWL XLII February 3, 2008 University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale Arizona New England Patriots vs. New York Giants Prediction: My prediction: Patriots 31 - Giants 20. Final Score: Giants 17 –Patriots 14 In the end, all of the pieces that should have worked for the Patriots didn’t and all of the things the Giants needed to do to win, they did.
